Storytel Tip #1 | The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang

Welcome to the first post of my new series Storytel Tips. In this series I give tips on which audiobooks you really should listen to and can find on the Storytel app. Of course, you can listen to these books on any other app, but I use Storytel and know they have these books on there!

Synopsis

This series is honestly so amazing. I finished it last week and still can’t stop thinking about it. I especially liked the narrator, Emily Woo Zeller. She does an amazing job. I know a lot of people prefer having multiple narrators, but Zeller uses different voices, so you recognise who’s talking.

Now beware, these are big books. The first audiobook is 19 hours long and the other two almost 24 hours long. This is a commitment, but trust me at the end of the journey you’ll be happy you pushed through.

R.F. Kuang is a master writer. You should know that this isn’t your fluffy fantasy book. This also isn’t YA, this is adult fiction, and it’s about war. But the way Kuang writes is mind-blowing. She takes you on this journey and after finishing the first book, you won’t be able to stop. You will want to listen to the rest.

I do recommend checking this audiobook out. It might be difficult at first to differentiate all the characters. It took me a while since I didn’t see how each name was written, but you’ll get used to it! Be sure to also check out the trigger warnings, I put them at the end of this post.

Deze serie is echt zo geweldig. Ik luisterde het vorige week uit en kan nog steeds niet stoppen met eraan te denken. Ik vond vooral de verteller, Emily Woo Zeller, zeer goed. Ze doet geweldig werk. Ik weet dat veel mensen liever meerdere vertellers hebben, maar Zeller gebruikt verschillende stemmen, zodat je herkent wie er aan het woord is.

The Poppy War is enkel beschikbaar in het Engels op Storytel, maar als dat je niet afschrikt zou ik het zeker aanraden. Pas op, dit zijn dikke boeken. Het eerste audioboek is 19 uur lang en de andere twee bijna 24 uur. Dit is een verbintenis, maar geloof me aan het einde van de reis, zul je blij zijn dat je het hebt volgehouden.

R.F. Kuang is een meesterschrijver. Je moet weten dat dit niet je fluffy fantasieboek is. Dit is ook geen YA, dit is fictie voor volwassenen, en het gaat over oorlog. Maar de manier waarop Kuang schrijft, is verbluffend. Ze neemt je mee op deze reis en na het afronden van het eerste boek kun je niet meer stoppen. Je zult naar de rest willen luisteren.

Ik raad je zeker aan om dit audioboek te beluisteren. In het begin kan het moeilijk zijn om alle karakters van elkaar te onderscheiden. Het heeft even geduurd voordat ik iedereen uit elkaar kon houden. Dit komt omdat ik natuurlijk niet zag hoe elke naam werd geschreven. Maar geen zorgen je zult eraan wennen! Bekijk ook zeker de triggerwaarschuwingen, ik zet ze aan het einde van dit bericht.
