Synopsis

Alyssa Farshot has spent her whole life trying to outrun her family legacy. Her mother sacrificed everything to bring peace to the quadrant, and her uncle has successfully ruled as emperor for decades. But the last thing Alyssa wants is to follow in their footsteps as the next in line for the throne. Why would she choose to be trapped in a palace when she could be having wild adventures exploring a thousand-and-one planets in her own ship?

But when Alyssa’s uncle becomes gravely ill, his dying wish surprises the entire galaxy. Instead of naming her as his successor, he calls for a crownchase, the first in seven centuries. Representatives from each of the empire’s prime families—including Alyssa—are thrown into a race to find the royal seal, which has been hidden somewhere in the empire. The first to find the seal wins the throne.

Alyssa’s experience as an explorer makes her the favorite to win the crown she never wanted. And though she doesn’t want to be empress, her duty to her uncle compels her to participate in this one last epic adventure. But when the chase turns deadly, it’s clear that more than just the fate of the empire is at stake. Alyssa is on her most important quest yet—and only time will tell if she’ll survive it.

Review

This cover is so pretty! I absolutely love it. Do you see all the little details? The longer I look at the cover, the more little details I see. Stunning.

CROWNCHASERS was such a fun and fast-paced read! In this book Alyssa Farshot (Faroshti) is thrown into a race for the crown. She has to find the royal seal which is hidden somewhere in the empire.

I really enjoyed the plot of this book. It was fun and original. The villain of the story was a bit predictable, but that didn’t bother me that much. I still gasped when they were revealed because by the end of the book I was really invested in the story and characters. And talking about the characters in CROWNCHASERS: they are the best. I loved Alyssa so much, she’s a total badass and reminded me a lot about Han Solo (the author tweeted saying Han was definitely a character jumping off point). She’s sarcastic and funny, but that’s only how she looks on the outside. There is so much more to Alyssa than first meets the eye. And Hell Monkey. Oh himbo Hell Monkey. He is the most loving, adorable and supportive engineer ever. All of these characters are so well-written and well-developed.

I am definitely planning on buying the sequel THRONEBREAKERS. I enjoyed the audiobook a lot, but think I would’ve enjoyed the book even more. I had a hard time remembering the names of all the characters and I think reading them and seeing how they’re spelled would’ve helped me. It might be because I try to multitask; listening to an audiobook while working. But honestly, it makes me want to read the book even more now. However, I need to say I absolutely loved the narrator Reba Buhr. Her voice suited Alyssa so well and she did an amazing job.

Would I recommend it?

Yes! I’d definitely recommend CROWNCHASERS and can’t wait to read the sequel THRONEBREAKERS.

Now the amazing Rebecca Coffindaffer, yes they really are amazing, made sure that this preorder campaign isn’t US only, but international! So international readers (like me) can enter as well and get some goodies! I’ve talked to Rebecca before and they said that they find it sad that international readers often don’t get to participate in giveaways or preorder campaigns.

I’m really excited they could make this happen. So be sure to preorder or ask your local library to stock THRONEBREAKERS which will be – without a doubt – amazing.

About the author
Rebecca Coffindaffer (they/she) grew up on Star WarsStar Trek, fantastical movies and even more fantastical books. They waited a long time for their secret elemental powers to develop, and in the interim, they started writing stories about magic and politics, spaceships, far-off worlds, and people walking away from explosions in slow motion. These days they live in Kansas with their family, surrounded by a lot of books and a lot of tabletop games and one big fuzzy dog. They’re the author of the YA space opera duology Crownchasers, out now from HarperTeen, and Thronebreakers, coming 10/12/21.
