Synopsis
Magic has made the city of Tiran an industrial utopia, but magic has a cost—and the collectors have come calling.
An orphan since the age of four, Sciona has always had more to prove than her fellow students. For twenty years, she has devoted every waking moment to the study of magic, fueled by a mad desire to achieve the impossible: to be the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry. When she finally claws her way up the ranks to become a highmage, however, she finds that her challenges have just begun. Her new colleagues will stop at nothing to let her know she is unwelcome, beginning with giving her a janitor instead of a qualified lab assistant.
What neither Sciona nor her peers realize is that her taciturn assistant was once more than a janitor; before he mopped floors for the mages, Thomil was a nomadic hunter from beyond Tiran’s magical barrier. Ten years have passed since he survived the perilous crossing that killed his family. But working for a highmage, he sees the opportunity to finally understand the forces that decimated his tribe, drove him from his homeland, and keep the Tiranish in power.
Through their fractious relationship, mage and outsider uncover an ancient secret that could change the course of magic forever—if it doesn’t get them killed first. Sciona has defined her life by the pursuit of truth, but how much is one truth worth with the fate of civilization in the balance?

Review
I received a free copy from Penguin UK Books and bol.com in exchange for my honest review. This does not affect my review. Thank you for this review copy.
If you’re looking for a book that will wreck your heart in the most beautiful way, Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang is exactly what you need. This was my first time diving into Wang’s work, and let me just say—I am officially obsessed. Her creative mind and breathtaking writing style left me in awe, and I’ll absolutely be devouring her other books and eagerly following her future projects.
Set in the industrial utopia of Tiran, where magic drives innovation but comes with a heavy cost, Blood Over Bright Haven follows Sciona, an ambitious mage fighting for recognition in a world that dismisses her potential. Paired with Thomil, a quiet but enigmatic outsider, she uncovers dangerous truths about magic’s origins and its devastating consequences. As their fragile partnership evolves, the two must navigate power struggles, societal corruption, and the weight of secrets that could reshape their world—or destroy it.
This story is tragically beautiful, with a plot that is as fascinating as it is heartbreaking. It peels back layers of what it means to use magic in this world, and every revelation is both mesmerizing and gut-wrenching. The way the story unfolded was incredibly compelling, even as it shattered my heart piece by piece.
The magic system is one of the most unique I’ve ever encountered—wickedly clever and complex. I’ll admit, it took me a moment to fully grasp how it all worked, but the inclusion of the spellograph illustration was a brilliant touch that made everything click. Once I understood it, I was completely immersed in the intricacy and thoughtfulness of this magical world.
Now let’s talk about the characters. Sciona was such an intriguing protagonist. Yes, she starts off a little naive, but her character arc is phenomenal. Watching her transform from someone selfish to selfless was so rewarding. Her growth felt natural and deeply earned, making her one of the most memorable characters I’ve read in a while.
And Thomil—what a gem of a character. He’s such a refreshing take on a “love interest” (if you can even call him that). Their dynamic isn’t your typical romantic pairing, but their partnership was incredibly satisfying to watch unfold. The way they worked together felt authentic, and it added so much depth to both of their journeys.
Then there’s the ending. Oh, the ending. Even though I had a sense of where the story was heading, it didn’t soften the blow. It was the kind of heartbreak that stays with you long after the final page, and while it hurt, it also felt like the perfect conclusion to this bittersweet tale.
Final thoughts
Would I recommend it? Absolutely. Blood Over Bright Haven is an emotional, thought-provoking read with unforgettable characters, a dazzlingly unique magic system, and a story that will tug at your heartstrings. If you’re a fan of fantasy that’s equal parts beautiful and devastating, you won’t want to miss this one. Just be sure to have tissues handy—you’ll need them. This book is a masterpiece. M.L. Wang’s storytelling talent shines brightly here, and I’m so excited to see what she creates next.
