Book beginnings on Fridays | March 3rd

In today’s ‘Book beginnings on Fridays’ I’m sharing the first sentence of a book I’m currently listening to – The Bridge Kingdom (The Bridge Kingdom #1) by Danielle L. Jensen.

Book beginnings on Fridays is hosted by Rose City Reader, and it is a chance to share the first sentence or so of a book you’ve reading, about to read or recently read.

The Bridge Kingdom
(The Bridge Kingdom #1)
by Danielle L. Jensen

Lara rested her elbows on the low sandstone wall, her eyes fixed on the glowing sun descending over the distant mountain peaks, nothing between here and there but scorching sand dunes, scorpions, and the occasional lizard.

I absolutely love this sentence. I really appreciate how Jensen describes the world in the first sentence of the book.

This book has been all over Bookstagram and Booktok and I wanted to know what the hype is about. So far, so good, I must say. It says on Jensen’s website that it is a romance novel, but there’s a lot of depth to it in my opinion. The romance is definitely a slow burn, which leaves enough time to get to know the different lands.

Synopsis

A warrior princess trained in isolation, Lara is driven by two certainties. The first is that King Aren of the Bridge Kingdom is her enemy. And the second is that she’ll be the one to bring him to his knees.

The only route through a storm-ravaged world, the Bridge Kingdom enriches itself and deprives its rivals, including Lara’s homeland. So when she’s sent as a bride under the guise of peace, Lara is prepared to do whatever it takes to fracture its impenetrable defenses. And the defenses of its king.

Yet as she infiltrates her new home and gains a deeper understanding of the war to possess the bridge, Lara begins to question whether she’s the hero or the villain. And as her feelings for Aren transform from frosty hostility to fierce passion, Lara must choose which kingdom she’ll save… and which kingdom she’ll destroy.
